It is the month that the Summer movie block officially begins. Get ready for superheroes, sci-fi epics, star-studded showcases, and all sorts of awe and entertainment. It is that time of month again when we look to the movies being released in the weeks ahead. 

May 3

Iron Man 3 – Wow, we are starting off with a bang! Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man has become the icon of the Marvel Film Universe. He is funny as hell, but can turn serious at the crack of a whip. IGN called this the best Iron Man yet. Let’s hope they are right.

 

The Iceman – Michael Shannon has had quite the 2013 thus far. He played a much smaller role in the last season of Boardwalk Empire, and I am wondering if that is not because he had so much film work recently. I cannot wait until we see him as Zod in The Man of Steel, but until then, having him play a mustachioed hit-man will satiate my Shannon need for the month of May.

 

May 10

The Great Gatsby – This is my favourite book of all time. Baz Luhrmann, the man who brought us Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, is going to make the Twenties roar with this film. People are hating on the fact that it has a soundtrack produced by Jay-Z, but this movie is going to be all style, as it should be. That is the root of The Great Gatsby, a man who’s story no one knows, but who’s style is the stuff of legends.

 

May 17

Star Trek Into Darkness – In what is surely my most anticipated sequel of the year, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk takes on a devilishly evil enemy in the guise of Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame. The trailers for this film look as though J.J. Abrams has crafted one hell of an emotional ride.

 

May 24

Fast & Furious 6 – What an incredible difference The Rock has made to this franchise. He gave it new life in the cat and mouse game of Fast Five and now, working with Vin and his team to track down a rogue Michelle Rodriguez, the latest in the F&F series looks bigger and more bad-ass then any of the previous films.

 

The Hangover Part III – I was not a fan of the second installment in this series. It felt like it was more of the same without any sense of enhanced excitement or danger. That looks to have changed with the third. If the trailer is to be believe, there are no boundaries here that director Todd Philips won’t cross.

 

May 31

After Earth – Yes this is an M. Night Shyamalan film, and yes his last few have been lack luster, but I am holding out hope that he still has it. After Earth is based on a story by star Will Smith and centers on his son battling an earth that has become inhabited by dangerous creatures far in the distant future after man had abandoned it. This has the potential to be really good sci-fi, so here’s hoping.

 

The East – The East was one of the big breakouts at Sundance. Written by indie darling Brit Marling, and starring her along side Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgård, The East is a pseudo-Anonymous-like group looking to take control away from the privileged through cyber terror and other nefarious acts.
