Oh it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the 2013 Oscar nominations, but, believe it or not, a year has passed and we have a whole new host of films to celebrate. Last weekend we had the actual ceremony for the Golden Globes, the weird baby cousin of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the big winners were American Hustle, The Wolf Of Wall Street, 12 Years A Slave, and the Dallas Buyers Club, and it looks like the Academy Awards are following suit, as all of those films are in the running for Best Picture. It is nice to have that absolutely ridiculous separation of comedy/musical vs. drama absent in the Academy Awards. Here we simply have the ten best films (according to the Academy) and one of them will be crowned champion. My personal pick would be Gravity.
Gravity received 10 nominations in total
Can I just say that there was a complete and utter lack of compelling animation this year, in the full length category at least. It is simply ridiculous that we have titles like The Croods competing for best picture. Pixar really dropped the ball with Monsters University. We aren’t even getting a 2014 film from them since they pushed back their next feature, Good Dinosaur, into 2015 last September. This will be the first year without a Pixar film since 2005, and well really, after MU, maybe that is a good thing. Pixar needs to refresh, compile some new ideas and then come back to us with something beautifully fresh and original. Oh and bring back Brad Bird!
Dreaming of the good ol’ days when Pixar had original ideas!
