Amidst the glitz and glamour of the 2016 Academy Awards lay a push for change. After two straight years of only white actors receiving nominations, the push for recognition and opportunity of roles for actors from minority groups was loud and strong (A movement that has taken on the moniker #OscarsSoWhite). No where was that more present than in the amazing monologue given by Chris Rock at the start of the show. It was funny and yet incredibly powerful and poignant. It pulled no punches on the barriers people of colour face in Hollywood, despite it’s “liberal” reputation. Check out the intro in its entirety below:

We thought Chris Rock did a great job too. He handled the controversy with grace and humor (in his opening monologue). He needs to have a permanent gig hosting the Oscars.
